President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, on Wednesday urged Greece to give full support to the bailout package that was agreed to by the euro zone leaders last week at the European Summit in Brussels. Barroso stated that the Greece government needs "to show that they are ready to work for national political unity and for achieving the broad support needed for implementation of the program." Barroso's statement came after George Papandreou on Tuesday announced he would call for a referendum on the EU rescue package, which includes a deal with private creditors of a 50% cut on Greece's sovereign debt. "Without the agreement of Greece to the program, the conditions for Greek citizens could become much more painful, in particular for the most vulnerable. The consequences would be impossible to foresee," Barroso said. The planned referendum has shocked both European leaders and financial markets, right ahead of the G20 Summit that will be held on the 3 and 4 of November in Cannes.

The first atellite of the EU’s Galileo programme for global satellite navigation was launched on Friday (21 October) from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guyana. The historical launch comes after years of internal battles over the financing of the multi-billion euro project, which is set to become the most prominent competitor of the US's GPS (see 'Background'). The European Commission estimates that the 30 satellites which will eventually constitute the Galileo constellation will all be launched by 2020. As from the end of 2012, a pair of satellites is set to be sent in orbit every quarter “with the aim of having 24 satellites in the space by the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015,” said EU Space policy spokesperson Carlo Corazza.

Indignados is Spanish for ‘those who are indignant or outraged’ They believe it is the current political and economic system that has left their country with a youth unemployment rate of 45%.
