Barroso calls for national unity in GreecePresident of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, on Wednesday urged Greece to give full support to the bailout package that was agreed to by the euro zone leaders last week at the European Summit in Brussels.
Barroso stated that the Greece government needs "to show that they are ready to work for national political unity and for achieving the broad support needed for implementation of the program."
Barroso's statement came after George Papandreou on Tuesday announced he would call for a referendum on the EU rescue package, which includes a deal with private creditors of a 50% cut on Greece's sovereign debt.
"Without the agreement of Greece to the program, the conditions for Greek citizens could become much more painful, in particular for the most vulnerable. The consequences would be impossible to foresee," Barroso said.
The planned referendum has shocked both European leaders and financial markets, right ahead of the G20 Summit that will be held on the 3 and 4 of November in Cannes.
