Afghanistan Alternative Development Program: Southern RegionFrom 2005 to 2009, the Alternative Development Program for the Southern Region of Afghanistan worked to reconstruct the once-vibrant agriculture sector in Afghanistanâs southern region. Formerly the countryâs breadbasket, Afghanistanâs Helmand Province produced some of the worldâs finest dried fruits, pomegranates, and nuts. However, years of war decimated the provinceâs agriculture sector and the infrastructure required to grow and transport fragile, perishable goods such as fruit. This video tells the story of the rebuilding of the Bost Airstrip near Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province. The reconstruction project transformed the Bost airstrip from a gravel landing strip into a paved runway that can handle commercial planes and cargo jets, restoring passenger service and providing a vital means of transporting crops to foreign markets.
