Save Today for a Better Tomorrow: Part 1By saving money, the rural poor can limit the effects of seasonal swings in agriculture-related income and establish a low-cost source of cash when they need it. But, without savings, economic growth is difficult. For Uganda, which has one of the lowest savings rates in the world and the lowest in east Africa, this is especially true.
The Rural Savings Promotion & Enhancement of Enterprise Development (Rural SPEED) program was designed, in part, to mobilize savings in rural Uganda. Though an innovative country wide awareness campaign, Rural SPEED used outdoor advertising, radio messaging, give-away items and an âedutainingâ road show drama to encourage rural Ugandans to save safely and wisely. The result? More than 300,000 new savers joined partner financial institutions.
