Researcher develops model to restore degraded forestsA Brazilian forestry academic has created a model that could restore areas of forest that have been stripped and degraded by mining processes.
Raphael Solomon, who works at the Amazonian research institution, the Goeldi Museum, has developed the model for areas of Pará state's Saracá Taquera national forest, and aims to reverse the damage caused by bauxite extraction.
The model will determine key species and secondary vegetation needed to contribute to the restoration of an area, and calculate the best methods of - and locations for - reintroduction.
