The intact harvester is a new invention that replaces the combine harvester. By harvesting crops intact - that is the straw and the grain together – the annual 1.8 billion acres of straw worldwide can be used for energy purposes. At present much of this straw returns to the land releasing CO² back to the atmosphere without benefit. Because the energy and labour inputs up to harvest are the same whether the straw is utilised or not, the straw is a free asset at that point. This straw could be used for electricity production or cellulosic ethenol. The intact harvester will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels (and so help to address the problems of climate change) without using agricultural land to grow crops for fuel. Even more importantly this idea will go someway towards feeding the expected 8 billion world population in 2025 at the moment of Peak Food as biofuels can be produced without using the food portion of the crop.

The dog days of summer are here! And with them comes an increased use of air conditioners and an increased strain on our already aging power grid. The U.S. has nearly 500,000 miles of transmission lines carrying electricity to consumers. Many of them are more than 50 years old, a concern, as the "design-life" for many of the components -- power transformers, circuit breakers, etc. is only 30 to 35 years on average. So what's being done to make sure the lights stay on? Experts say it's a combination of building new power plants, improving older ones and using advanced transmission technologies. The Electricity in Baghdad, and indeed all of Iraq, has been an ongoing problem. As the war and occupation nearly approach their 4th anniversary, these problems continue. Although the press generally doesn’t touch on such issues, even today in much of Baghdad, residents only receive a few hours of electricity per day from the grid. Those who could afford it have taken to using private generators for much of their electricity supply. The electricity problems have also been a huge rallying point for Anti-American, and sometimes even pro-Saddam sentiment. Iraqis are quick to remind foreigners that in Saddam’s time, after the utter destruction of the electrical grid during the Gulf War in 1991, the electricity had basic functionality within 3 months. Electricity is now just one of many issues that, if solved in even a small way, could go far in settling the intransigent resistance and putting Iraq back on the road to stability.

The concept car, called the Chevrolet Volt, is a battery-powered electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional electricity, thereby extending its range. The Volt can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours each day. When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the Volt can deliver 40 city miles of pure electric vehicle range.
