カズオ・イシグロのSF小説『わたしを離さないで』は、映画化もされたし、日本でドラマ化もされたので、ご存知の方も多いと思う。それは臓器のドナーになることを目的に生み出され育てられた、クローン人間たちの物語だ。
クローン人間である登場人物たちは、15歳になるまで全寮制の学校で学び、卒業の日に、それからの自分たちの運命を聞かされる。学校を卒業すると彼らは、それぞれ「介護人」や「回復センターの職員」などの仕事に従事するが、基本的には臓器提供を求められる日の訪れを待って過ごすことになる。
彼らの人生の価値は、彼らが提供可能な臓器を持っているということであり、それ以外には何もない。彼らは3度か4度の臓器提供を経て若くして死ぬ。彼らの人生はそれだけだ。結婚はできず、もちろん子供をつくることもできない。
彼らはただ、健康な臓器をつくり、保管するためだけに生きる。彼らの生活や、それに伴い発生する思考や感情は、副次的なものにすぎない。彼らが葛藤を抱えたり、苦しんだり悲しんだりするのは彼らの勝手であり、彼らの仕事＝「健康な臓器を保管すること」には関係がない。苦しもうが、悲しもうが、そこに臓器があればよいのだ。
『わたしを離さないで』はフィクションだが、すべてのSFがそうであるように、それがフィクションでしかないと割り切ることはできない。過去には実際の人間を使ったリスクの高い医療実験や化学実験は何度も行われてきたのだし、本作自体もそうした歴史的事実に着想を得ているのだろう。
さすがに現代では、クローン人間をつくって臓器提供をさせようという発想に至るような為政者・意志決定者はいないだろうが、しかし、何が倫理的で何が倫理的ではないか、という合理的な線引きはなされていない。
人間はだめで、クローン人間はだめで、それでは動物ならばよいのか？ だめな動物とだめでない動物がいるのか？ それらを隔てるものは何なのか？ 感情の有無か？ それでは感情とは何か？ 感情があるからだめなのだとすると、感情がなければいいのか？ それでは脳を取り去ればいいのか？ 脳のない人間ならば、その身体に何をしても許されるのか？
──そうした議論はそれほど多くは成されていないように思われる。特に日本においては。

人工でつくられる肺は人工でつくられる肺でしかなく、ヒトではなくモノでしかないのだから、そこに人道的な観点から疑義を差し挟むことは難しい、というのが一般的な感覚だと思う。それ自体には疑問はない。
私が疑問に思うのは、線引きはどこにあるのか、ということである。
