In physics, a laser is a device that emits light through a specific mechanism for which the term laser is an acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. This is a combined quantum-mechanical and thermodynamical process discussed in more detail below. As a light source, a laser can have various properties, depending on the purpose for which it is designed and calibrated. A typical laser emits light in a narrow, low-divergence beam and with a well-defined wavelength (corresponding to a particular color if the laser is operating in the visible spectrum). This is in contrast to a light source such as the incandescent light bulb, which emits into a large solid angle and over a wide spectrum of wavelength. Chernobyl Heart is a 2003 documentary film by Maryann DeLeo. The film won the Best Documentary Short Subject award at the 2004 Academy Awards. In the film, DeLeo travels through Ukraine and Belarus with Adi Roche, the Irish founder of the Chernobyl Children's Project International, observing the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on the health of children in the area. In addition to mutations and severe radiation poisoning, many children suffer from a previously unknown cardiac degradation condition, so common in the area it is known as "Chernobyl heart". DeLeo herself contracted caesium poisoning during the making of the film, although she was successfully treated and made a full recovery.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism as the result of a chemical reaction during which chemical energy is converted to light energy. The name originates from the Greek bios for "living" and the Latin lumen "light". Bioluminescence may be generated by symbiotic organisms carried within a larger organism. It is generated by an enzyme-catalyzed chemoluminescence reaction, wherein the pigment luciferin is oxidised by the enzyme luciferase. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is involved in most instances. The chemical reaction can occur either within or outside of the cell. In bacteria, the expression of genes related to bioluminescence is controlled by an operon called the lux operon. Bioluminescence is a form of luminescence, or "cold light" emission; less than 20% of the light generates thermal radiation. It should not be confused with fluorescence, phosphorescence or refraction of light.

The Beads of Courage Program at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. is a tangible way for pediatric cancer patients to tell about every step of their journey to get well. Dozens of colorful glass beads represent a different treatment or experience in the cancer treatment unit. When they are first diagnosed, they receive individual letter beads to spell out their name. White beads are given for each treatment of chemotherapy, brown when they lose their hair, red for blood transfusions, glow-in-the-dark for radiation treatments and dozens more. When the treatment ends, young cancer survivors receive a purple heart. Arkansas Children’s Hospital is one of 14 hospitals in the United States to implement the Beads of Courage Program. This video profiles the program at Arkansas Children's Hospital and includes interviews with the nurse manager of the oncology unit, as well as young cancer patients.
