Understand Your Emotions was an attempt to lend a biological understanding to emotional responses. He first tries out the old Jack-in-the-box trick on three of the students, and notes their reactions to the surprise. He then performs other experiments, including hooking up one student to a polygraph machine and then testing his uncomfortable reaction to words like “drill” and “probe.” The film is often ridiculous, as is the premise since emotional response is hardly understood biologically even today. This film is a good example of the sorts of questionable material that was forced on young people in the 1950s.

Reeking of dated social structure, this entertaining 1950’s conservative film calls into question the practice of “going steady.” It uses title cards to ask, “Should teens go steady?” in order to provoke a discussion on its benefits and problems – back when the topic of going steady was edgy! According to the film, going steady introduces problems such as getting hurt by being too serious, moving too far sexually, and more. Marie and Jeff, the stars, find their friends describing their relationship as “going steady” and they’re not sure they like it. They agonize with themselves and their parents over the question. Classic hilarious scenes include Mom commenting, “I hope Jeff doesn't feel he has the right to…take liberties.” Going Steady is an exemplary manifestation of conservative society’s fears about what is now considered harmless behavior.

Okay- they don’t get ambushed- but they do get asked to leave by the cops for disrupting a peaceful area and instantly making the situation hostile. The cops then had to follow this group of republican idiots around the entire downtown area to make sure they didn’t get their asses beat. It was the one time during the entire DNC that I actually felt like a huge police presence was necessary- to protect these Nixon Youth from their own stupidity. It wasn’t the fact they were there, it was the fact they were intentionally trying to provoke the peaceful anti-republicans around them. They seemed to think they were invincible, until the police captain told them the police could not protect them if the crowd got suddenly hostile. True to our pledge to represent all protestors no matter how stupid, this video exists. I like the Crystal Pepsi guys better.
