大阪の「天神祭」は東京・神田祭、京都・祇園祭とともに日本三大祭りの一つと言われ、毎年130万人もの人が訪れる夏の都市大祭です。
愛染祭、住吉祭とともに大阪三大夏祭りの一つとも言われています。
天神祭は、大阪市内の天満にある大阪天満宮の氏地を中心に、毎年、宵宮が7月24日、本宮が翌7月25日に定められ、賑やかに行われます。
また、この日までの間に様々な行事が行われ、「天神祭ギャルみこし」や奉納花火なども天神祭の賑わいをもたらす行事として定着しています。祭りの中心は大阪天満宮で祀られている菅原道真公です。市内の繁栄ぶりを道真公の御神霊に見て頂き、さらなる繁栄を祈願するために、氏地を巡行します。
この巡行で有名なのが、本宮の日に行われる陸渡御、船渡御。
特に船渡御は千年以上も前に始まり、大阪とともにその古い歴史を歩んできました。水都大阪を代表するお祭り、「天神祭」です。

【大阪天満宮】（おおさかてんまんぐう）は、大阪府大阪市北区に鎮座する神社（天満宮）。別名に天満天神・浪華菅廟・中島天満宮がある。大阪市民からは「天満（てんま）の天神さん」と呼ばれ親しまれている。
毎年7月24日から25日にかけて行われる天神祭は日本三大祭、大阪三大夏祭りの一つとして知られている。901年に菅原道真が、藤原時平により九州大宰府へ配転（左遷）させられた際、同地にあった大将軍社に参詣した。903年に菅原道真が没した後、天神信仰が始まる。949年に大将軍社の前に7本の松が生え、霊光を放ったという奇譚が都に伝わった。そのため村上天皇の勅命によって天満宮を建立させたのが始まりである。
