For someone who had teething problems at the start, Sri Lankan batsman Chamara Silva is proving to be an almost unstoppable run-scoring machine at the World Cup. Silva scored 61 and 152 not out in only his second test to set up a series-levelling victory in New Zealand in December 2006. He then stroked a majestic 107 not out in the final one-dayer in India in February. Although India won to clinch the series 2-1, Silva's sparkling stroke play won him the man-of-the-match award.

30th Match, Super Eights: West Indies v Sri Lanka at Providence - Apr 1, 2007 Sri Lanka won by 113 runs. Sri Lanka 303/5 (50 ov); West Indies 190 (44.3 ov). West Indies lurched a step closer to leaving their own World Cup as Sanath Jayasuriya's 115 condemned them to a 113-run defeat in front of a rare full house in Guyana. He and Mahela Jayawardene added 183 and then early wickets buried West Indies' chase before it had barely begun, Jayasuriya adding three to his outstanding innings. After their heart-stopping defeat against South Africa, Sri Lanka's Super Eights campaign is back on track. From the moment Jayasuriya cut loose following a cautious start it was all one-way traffic. West Indies' fielding turned into shambles with dropped chances and fumbles as their World Cup dreams were left hanging by a thread. Even three straight wins - an unlikely prospect on current form and attitude - might not be enough unless other results go their way.

Sri Lanka's express fast bowler Lasith Malinga rocked the 2007 World Cup by claiming four wickets in four successive deliveries (including a hat-trick) but could not prevent South Africa from squeezing a tense 1 wicket victory in the Super Eight match at Guyana On Wednesday. Malinga became the fifth bowler in World Cup history to claim a hat-trick. Malinga's deadly blow in the 45th over picked Shaun Pollock, whom he bowled for 13 and then followed it up by inducing a catch off Andrew Hall to Upul Tharanga to reduce the Proteas to 205 for 7. He then returned next over to claim the set Jacques Kallis caught behind for 86 and followed up next with a deadly yorker to remove Makhaya Ntini for naught. His feat is unprecedented in ODI history for becoming the only bowler to claim four wickets in four balls, including a hat-trick.

20th Match, Group B: India v Sri Lanka at Port of Spain - Mar 23, 2007 Sri Lanka won by 69 runs Sri Lanka 254/6 (50 ov); India 185 (43.3 ov). Inspired by a genius who raised his game when the occasion demanded, Sri Lanka overpowered India in their final league match at Port-of-Spain and stormed into the Super Eights. India suffered one of their most disappointing days in recent memory, muffing up a run-chase on a pitch posing no worries, and were all but ousted from the World Cup, in what is likely to be their worst campaign since 1979.

In an atmosphere as highly charged and as dramatic as any could possibly be, and with astonishing reserves of discipline and self belief, Australia won a place in the World Cup final on Sunday. They will play Sri Lanka, who, ironically, they had chosen to avoid in the first week of the tournament. The triumph came by five runs and, it must be said, with the assistance of a woeful West Indian middle order who sunk without trace during a collapse in which they lost eight wickets for 37 runs in just over seven overs.

He was widely recognised as a master tactician and was famous for defending his players at all costs.Ranatunga is also remembered for his stand in a one day international against England. James Franklin leaked 69 runs from 10 overs but claimed the wickets of Jayasuriya and Tharanga with successive balls in the 24th over. But Jayasuriya made a mockery of the target with his 23rd one-day hundred off 78 balls as he and Tharanga savaged the Kiwi attack. In the end, skipper Mahela Jayawardene (34no) and Kumar Sangakkara (36) then helped seal victory with exactly 10 overs to spare.
