In his paintings he brings together figures and the disfigured, drawing and painting, spontaneous impulses and well thought-out ideas. He draws lines on the canvas with a spray gun and then, directly after, wipes them out again with a rag drenched in solvent – to give a new picture in which clear lines have to stand their own against smeared surfaces. Das "Museum für Antike Schifffahrt" zeigt eine weltweit einzigartige Sammlung an Fundstücken und Rekonstruktionen aus der maritimen Geschichte des römischen Imperiums. Die Initialzündung lieferte ein Fund auf einer Großbaustelle: fünf Schiffe aus dem 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Mit diesen Wracks und den Rekonstruktionen im Maßstab 1:1 wurde rund 13 Jahre später das Museum eröffnet, untergebracht in einem ehemaligen Lokschuppen am Mainzer Südbahnhof. Neben den lebensechten Nachbauten sind vor allem die kleinen Schiffsmodelle beliebt. Rund dreißig Schiffstypen sind ausgestellt. Alle Modelle werden in den Werkstätten des Museum gebaut. Viele antike Fundstücke lagen fast 2.000 Jahre im Wasser. Die Restauratoren müssen das alte Holz mit Kunstharz stabilisieren, erst dann können sie mit den Fragmenten die ursprüngliche Konstruktion darstellen. Das Wissen der Forscher kam auch ein paar Pionieren an der Mosel zugute. Dort haben einige engagierte Bürger das so genannte Neumagener Weinschiff in Originalgröße schwimmfähig nachgebaut. Die Sammlung des Mainzer Museums wird ständig erweitert, so etwa mit einem Rammsporn, mit dem die meisten Kriegsschiffe der Römer im Mittelmeerraum ausgestattet waren. In den Werkstätten der Modellbauer entsteht eine Dromone, ein byzantinisches Kriegsschiff, in dem 200 Ruderer für Vortrieb sorgten.

The external cause for this unusual project is the upcoming Van Gogh-exhibition, a spectacular, comprehensive exhibition taking place from April to September 2009 at the Kunstmuseum Basel. To create space for the show, parts of the Kunstmuseum’s collection had to be removed. The Schaulager’s proposal was to host these work and to present them in an exhibition. The show Holbein to Tillmans - Prominente Gäste aus dem Kunstmuseum Basel allows to see these works in a different light at Schaulager. Some of them have been spread out on a monumental wall in Petersburger hanging style, providing the framework for the interior spaces of the exhibition.
