Art Film, paintings set to music and poetry Ever since I was a teenager I made tape cassettes, and then cd's, for friends and family. This continued into my early thirties: these musical presents a hodge podge of soundtrack clips, opera, classical, singer songwriters, motown, and international variety. Quite often I would be working on a painting or poem while creating these tapes, each giving some sort of thematic sustenance and influence to one another. Now I am in my early 40's, with friends and family lost or far flung, but I've created a series of short films called "Murals In Motion", to capture some of the images and feelings of that time: a spiritual bond. Tinted with more than a hint of nostalgia and shared as a scrapbook moment,I hope the film "strikes chords" of correspondence in the viewer as well. Thank you.

Art Film, painted poems When I first began experimenting making films out of my artwork and poetry I came across a product called Photoshow. This allowed me to create "fades" & other effects, while also utilizing captions. (At that point I was not savvy enough to figure out how to use a sound recorder and microphone.) I tried achieving the same thematic effect using windows movie maker, but have always been a bit torn about what was achieved originally, and only recently learned how to covert photoshow to avi. I thus present these films with (fingers crossed) the clarity of the originals while still hoping to create a spiritual exchange between the art and the viewer. In far flung cliff-hugging villages everyone wears blue indigo clothing and dazzling silver that they make themselves. They live in awesome wooden houses and eat stuff that would leave you stunned. Although big cities in China are seeing huge changes, the rural areas are timeless and people live lives that, to us as westerners, are totally foreign. Seemingly diagonally opposed to what we know and understand. Like in the first episode, we focus mainly on crafts and things people make by hand, all the while keeping an eye out for situations that would take us on another tangent. This last episode ends in Tibet where we encounter the feisty spirit of the indigenous people, Buddhism with all its color and texture and crafts and lifestyles that are as old as the world itself.

A 10 thousand mile road trip through China CHINA EPISODE 1 - This two part documentary tells the story of an epic 3 month road trip through China. Susan Morkel, a young South African woman, takes us through some of the most mysterious and fascinating regions in our modern world. While some have heard of The Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and Chairman Mao, most people actually know very little about this huge country. This first 48 minute episode takes our valiant explorer from Pakistan over the Khunjerab Pass into Kashgar in western China, through the Taklimakan Desert and on to Beijing. Both episodes explore the remote outback of China to find stories that have never been told before. It also shows rural life and what people do there to sustain themselves. Focusing mainly on what people make with their hands, this film stays clear of the usual tourist spots. Going much further than the hazy horizon on dusty detours, this road movie will make you want to pack your bags and go there yourself.

Long before any humans settled on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa baboons were already there. The Cape of Good Hope, 65 km south of Cape Town in South Africa, is the most south-westerly point of the African continent. This spectacularly beautiful piece if land known as the Cape Peninsula looks like a long crooked finger pointing down to the South Pole. It is home to a multitude of plants and animals including the Chacma baboon (Papio Ursinus). This 52 minute documentary, shot over a period of 7 years, tells the story of the last remaining baboons that are locked into a fierce battle for territory with humans who arrived much later. Since the turn of the century these baboons have effectively been cut off from the rest of their brothers and sisters in Africa by a veritable wall of development. Now they have nowhere else to go and as their natural habitat shrinks, frequent clashes occur with their neighbouring primates, humans.

Homage to the AIDS Memorial Quilt "Quilt Suite" by NY artist/author Stephen Mead is comprised of 8 sections, each section paying homage to the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Having worked in the medical field for over a decade, as a direct care giver, Stephen's own art became greatly influenced by the Quilt and its folk art tradition. "Quilt Suite" premiered at the Digital Film Festival IZOLENTA/'06, St. Petersburg, Russia, and then was excerpted online. This dvd includes Stephen's spoken-word poetry, photo collages, and paintings in addition to digitized images. The narration and "fades" are set to music to create a moving soundscape of memory, love and loss. Included is a bonus edition of AIDS March '88 shot with cloud footage in 2007.

The story shows how one soldier did his duty and then how he dealt with the death and destruction he saw all around him. This film is a first-person account and incorporates still photographs and super 8 mm film footage taken April 1969 to April 1970. The film and photos are used to illustrate the issues and difficulties faced by an infantry second lieutenant who had recently been commissioned through ROTC at a small mid-western university. Although this young officer was trained and ready for war, the suffering of the children broke his heart and drove him to attempt to comfort and clothe all he could. In the end, he had to leave those children and return home where he became a teacher dedicated to helping young people train for their futures.
