The Wissahickon Charter School uses their surrounding urban and natural environments to help students and their families become active participants in learning. In addition to the school's green building elements, the curriculum seamlessly integrates environmental education. Students have learned to create bio-fuel, turned an asphalt pavement into a garden and participated in the GreenPlan Philadelphia process.

Now that the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers are healthier, Philadelphians are flocking to their banks to walk along paths, play in parks, and get onto the river. The Tidal Delaware Water Trail runs through Southeast Pennsylvania's towns, cities, and shorelines - allowing paddlers, sailors and motor boaters to safely experience the cultural, ecological and historical treasures along the river.

One Crescent Drive exemplifies sustainable development and green building in areas such as energy conservation and resource efficiency, waste reduction, pollution prevention, and sustainable, healthy work environment. As a Platinum LEED certified building, it serves as a model for other green planned buildings, including additional buildings planned in the Navy Yard Corporate Center.

As Pennsylvania's coal industry declines, wind power has become a way to maintain Pennsylvania's energy production heritage. The 13 turbines on Locust Ridge Wind Farm put enough clean, renewable wind energy into the grid to power more than 6,000 homes a year. Residents and businesses in the Philadelphia area can purchase wind power and support further development of these innovative technologies.

Jackie O'Neil built the Philadelphia area's first LEED-certified house. Using techniques like solar panels, geothermal heating, and energy efficient appliances, the home relies on no fossil-fuel energy sources. Constructed at just 3 percent above cost, the experience gained has allowed subsequent homes to be constructed at no extra building cost. O'Neil is now an advocate who speaks regionally about the cost and environmental savings of sustainable home building.
