Our Gang Rascals Small Talk Now with Music ScoreThis is the first talking Little Rascals film, released in 1929. The sound was recorded on Vitaphone disc, separate from the film itself, and shipped to theaters in two parts, the Vitaphone record discs to be played concurrently with the silent film. It was three reels long - the longest Little Rascals film to date. It was rarely seen on television due to its long length.
The transition to sound was awkward - lots of loud noises, shouting of dialogue to be sure the mike picked up the sound, and long periods of barren track with just the pops and scratches of the disc itself. This is because at this time, the films themselves had no "scores", or music under the dialogue. For Hal Roach, this would come later, in 1930.
Just for fun, I have added original LeRoy Shield music to this film, making the long periods of silence a little less awkward. Note the original title card "Hal Roach Present His Rascals Voices"!
