Recycling Cell Phones and Chinese Business MenFuel Tech, Inc., winner of the Export Achievement Certificate in 2006, was awarded it again last week by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Fuel Tech is a leading company in development of state-of-the-art proprietary technologies for air pollution control, process optimization, and advanced engineering services. The partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce has helped Fuel Tech with providing country-specific resources in international markets. Fuel Tech hosted a workshop in July that attracted leaders of government, the power generation industry, the environmental and engineering business sectors. Brilliance China Automotive LTD was the first Chinese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1992. Yang Rong, the founder of Brilliance China Automotive, became a U.S. citizen five years ago and lives with his family in Los Angeles where he is basing his start-up company, Hybrid Kinetic Motors. Hybrid Kinetics plans to offer a full-range line of hybrid vehicles by 2013 and forecasting that it will make as many as one million vehicles a year by 2018. EcoATM, a self-serving e-cycling station that electronically inspects phones and assigns them real-time secondary market value as an in-store trade-up coupon or a gift card. If the phone no longer has a resale value the customer can chose to recycle it instead. The kiosk in Omaha, Nebraska was the first station to be unveiled this past September. On the first day it collected 23 phones for recycling and by day two, it had brought in over $100 worth of phones. The machines rely on a camera-based system to inspect the phones for damage. It has yet to be determined if the machines have the same accuracy as human inspection, but it is a step forward in battling e-waste.
