The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Terror By Night (1946)Sherlock Holmes returns in the masterful mystery Terror By Night. Played by perfectly cast Basil Rathbone, Holmes is hired to safeguard a precious diamond. The precious gem is to be transported by train, and Holmes correctly deduces that this is when thieves will strike. And strike they do! However, Holmes has switched the diamond out for a fake. All would be well since the gem was kept safe, but the diamond’s owner is murdered on the train! From this point on, Terror By Night, unlike other Sherlock Holmes films, is more true to the original form of the novels in that the story focuses on deduction and hints as to who the murderer could be. Subtle, penetrating, and clever, Terror By Night is Sherlock Holmes at his best.
