Load shedding and power breakdowns are routine and result in disruption of businesses, educational institutions and other health facilities. Students face the brunt particularly as their studies are affected badly. The existing power plants and their capacity of power generation are on the decline and the shortfall is widening. The local administration has consistently failed in delivering up to the promises. And due to government’s lack of interest, the region’s resources have not been optimally utilized. Adding to this, none of the power projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has been announced for the region.

However, the people of Gilgit Baltistan are forced to pay heavy taxes to the administration, which turns a blind eye to their needs. The same grim situation has continued for years. Despite collecting taxes according to its own will, Islamabad has failed miserably in generating employment, providing infrastructure or containing inflation. Locals are demanding that all illegal taxes be immediately called off and Gilgit-Baltistan be made a tax-free zone.

Muzaffarabad (PoK) July 27: Protests have erupted all across Pakistan Occupied Kashmir over anger and resentment at what locals are describing as a rigged July 21 election which saw the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) win 31 out of 41 seats or more than seventy five percent of the seats. Widespread protests were witnessed in the major PoK towns like Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Chinari and Mirpur after members of the PML (N) killed a supporter of the Muslim Conference (MC) in Muzaffarabad. The protestors burnt tyres, blocked traffic and clashed with police. Several cases of injuries were reported as the PoK administration moved to clamp down on press reporting.

The recent landslides in Neeli near Hatiyyan after the recent flash floods caused huge damage to the roads and infrastructure.

Chanari (PoK), Apr 26: Anxiety, fear and hopelessness loom large in the air of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir or PoK. The residents of Chanari region have been witness to several deadly accidents in the area due to the poor condition of roads. However, they have received little help from the government. The route from Chanari to Gujar Bandi in PoK passes through many mountain trenches, dangerous curves and with a river flowing just below the road. But, unfortunately, the local administration and the Pakistan government have not constructed parapets throughout the route or signboards depicting dangerous mark, reflectors and other safety measures. The government's ignorance has resulted in several road accidents. So far, around 31 people have lost their lives. With no help from the administration, locals have decided to stop using the route for their own safety. In the past too, several pleas to improve civic amenities in PoK fell on the deaf ears of the Pakistan government. People are losing their lives due to negligence and irresponsible attitude of the authorities and the government has completely turned a blind eye to it.

The lack of job opportunities and low standards of education have made it difficult for them to secure jobs. Despite being rich in natural resources, Gilgit Baltistan has not done very well in realising its economic potential. In the absence of industries, there are not enough jobs on offer. The people of Gilgit Baltistan blame the administration for failing to come out with effective policies for the welfare of locals. Not much has been done to promote tourism and farming sectors in the region. Pakistan has built many dams in Gilgit Baltistan to exploit abundant water resources and generate electricity for its provinces. However, the people in Gilgit Baltistan are forced to live in darkness. With no government help reaching the public, the people have no option but to accept their fate.

Hitting the streets has become a ritual for people who have to protest for minor issues also. There are serious charges against the Prime Minister Chaudhary Abdul Majid and his relatives who locals allege have amassed ill-gotten money. Expecting better governance in the region is an illusion for the people. Under illegal occupation of Pakistan for over 65 years, the people of PoK are yet to see the dawn of freedom when they will able to choose a government of their own without Islamabad calling the shots.
