Sweeps used to be one of the hallmarks of the television season: hyped new network entertainment series, investigative local news reports, celebrities galore. Not so much anymore, as we explain in this segment, in addition to other insights on how the business of television has changed and how PR pros can achieve better SMT success.

The producer of the "Quit Smoking Public Service Announcement" put out a call for anyone who could be an extra for the Saturday morning filming, so I said I would help out. The PSA was one in a series of PSA's targeted towards various sectors of the LGBT community. This particular segment was targeted to the HIV+ community and depicted a stop smoking group facilitated by a man who was HIV+. The actor playing that role did a wonderful job empathizing with and motivating the group he was overseeing. I played a member of that group. It was a pleasant shoot and I got to meet several interesting actors and got to practice my non-verbal acting skills. Due to logistical issues, the actual PSA has not yet been publicly released, so a placeholder frame has been included here.

"Broadway Backwards 3" was a difficult but rewarding piece to edit. Out at the Center was allowed to interview performers at the party, but not allowed to film the actual performances, which were filmed by a third party. I had to interleave our interviews with their performance footage, which had already been edited into a short punchy segment with abrupt jump cuts between performances. At the suggestion of the Director, I used "J" cuts and "L" cuts to soften the transitions, which made all the difference. Having the audio come in before the video and vice versa gave the segment a feeling of continuity, while allowing me to downplay the third party's motion graphic logos in their video footage, and to play up Out at the Center's motion graphics.

"Gayety Credit Roll" was a very entertaining event to film and an equally entertaining segment to edit. Gayety is a Queer Comedy Cabaret that performed on a sweltering evening in a room whose air conditioner had broken, so while everyone was hot and uncomfortable, the performance was so entertaining that it started and ended with a packed house. My favorite part is the unsolicited audience participation during Miss Betty Pages' ukulele serenade. I'm glad I zoomed out fast enough to catch that when I was filming the event. Borrowing on my Marriage March Credit Role idea, I made use of the translucent colored panels one last time in order to display the credit roll text.

"Coming Out Spiritually" was a talk given at The NYC LGBT Center by the gay mystic, Christian de la Huerta. The title sequence is my first project in Motion software. There were many memorable quotes that evening that, when combined, made for a very moving storyline about how it can more difficult to present yourself as a spiritual being than as an LGBT person. I don't know if they have ever spoken together, but I like to think of this segment as a companion piece to Andrew Harvey's "Sacred Activism", both of which demonstrate that the LGBT community once played a significant spiritual role in several societies, that many LGBT people are striving to reclaim that role, and that LGBT people can and do make a difference in the world.

"Causes in Common Part 2" was a first attempt at color correction with the help of colleagues who were more familiar with the process. All three stories in this segment had some striking observations that a layman could understand and relate to. From Miriam Leung's observations on the cultural shifts towards parenting to Sujatha Jesudason's recounting of a nightmarish, yet feasible vision of the future.

"Causes in Common 1" was the first part of a three part series of segments providing highlights from the first session of an all-day symposium that took place in Chicago, bringing together LGBT and reproductive rights organizations to demonstrate how the two complement each other and can make a greater impact by combining forces. Richard Burns, the Executive Director of the NYC LGBT Center, gives an excellent overview of how Causes in Common started. The biggest challenge in editing the footage was isolating the compelling stories from the wealth of footage. My second foray into LiveType software, I created an orange "shimmer" that travels over gray lettering, mirroring the colors of the Causes in Common logo. In the subsequent "Causes in Common 2" segment, several editors got together and helped me take a stab at color correcting, which made a huge improvement over the very reddish cast you see here, which was due to the fluorescent overhead lighting.

The UN Women's Panel segment aired in September 2007, and was the first time I took over an unfinished project in its early stages from an editor who had to bow out due to a personal emergency. Getting to know the footage, I structured the segment around the speaker introductions in order to reinforce the identity of each speaker and her native country. I also learned the value of, "Less is more," when I created a title sequence with a spinning globe and saw how it drew attention away from the segment itself, and opted instead for a simple translucent orange panel, borrowing from my Marriage March Credit Roll idea.

Here's another video from my collection. This year, The Von Erich family is inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame. Here's a very touching segment that aired on the TV show A Current Affair from 1993 featuring the Von Erich family tragedies. So much respect towards Kevin Von Erich over the years. To go thru what he has losing all his brothers is too hard to fathom. This video clip was powerful back then, and it still is now. Enjoy all. **NOTE** Although Veoh allows uploads much longer than You Tube, their audio quality is subpar. I originally thought the low audio was my fu** up, but its Veoh.

While reviewing the footage for Garden Party 24, which aired in the July 2007 show, I made the happy discovery that both the mainstage and roving cameras had coincidentally been filming Chris Garneau's performance at the same time, so I was able to create the same sort of split-screen edit that I used in the the Garden Party 23 segment the previous year for Christine Ebersole's performance. I had been taking a class in Adobe After Effects at the time, so I applied what I had learned by taking a photograph of a forest scene watercolor that my great grandfather had painted, removed the background, split the painting into layers, and positioned them in three dimensional space, so that it appears that the viewer is flying through a forest towards the stage.

The Garden Party 2007 preview was edited by another producer from footage that I filmed and edited the previous year for the Garden Party 2006 event. Seeing how someone else can thoughtfully edit your previously edited footage was enlightening and fun, since it brought back memories of that event, which was a lot of fun to film and to be a part of. This segment also taught me to be respectful of other editors' work when I have been in the same position of editing their work, which has happened a few times when editors have had personal emergencies, such as the UN Commission on Women, which aired in September 2007.

Andrew Harvey was invited to speak at the Center by the Out and Faithful program. I initially chose to film and edit the Sacred Activism segment because of the spiritual element inferred by the intriguing title. I am very interested in religion and spirituality, so I tend to gravitate towards such stories. After hearing Andrew Harvey speak however, it was his empowering message to the LGBT community that struck me the most; we are unique and gifted and special and we have the power to change the world for the better and better ourselves in the process if we so choose. During my coming out process, I read somewhere that you eventually come to feel glad that you were born gay instead of straight, because you are different and special. I could never fathom myself feeling that way, but after hearing Andrew Harvey speak, I can now see it. It was difficult to edit his powerful message and his wonderful wit and sense of humor down to just five minutes.

Two Spirit aired on the January 2007 show and is one of my favorite segments. A panel discussion comprised of Native Americans from different tribes from different parts of the country spoke about the centuries-old Native American belief system around LGBT people, which is known as Two Spirit. LGBT people were an integral, respected, even revered part of Native American society prior to the settlement of the Americas by Europeans, which was an empowering and hopeful story of what role LGBT people once did and possibly could again play in the world. I enjoyed bringing some creativity to this segment; the masks in the segment are my own and were hanging on my living room wall, while the drawings I drew myself in high school. It was fun incorporating those artistic visual elements into the title slates.

Garden Party 23 was my first solo project after completing my training as a volunteer video producer. Garden Party is an annual fundraiser to benefit the NYC LGBT Center. With the music and comedy, it's always a fun segment to edit. I've edited Garden Party for the past 3 years in a row; this was my first. I noticed that our Mainstage and Roving cameras were filming Christine Ebersole at the same time, which I used for a split screen edit showing the same point in time from two different perspectives.
